As the story continues the Duke of Buckingham comes to see the Queen, and before he leaves he asks the Queen for a token of her love for him. In honor of his request the Queen gives him a diamond brooch, given to her by her husband, the King, for her birthday... Athos is arrested, because he is thought to be d'Artagnan. When Monsieur de Treville hears about this he goes to get him freed. But before he gets to where Athos is being held, the Cardinal arrives and convinces the King to not let him go. Monsieur de Treville still hoped that the King would listen to him, yet while Monsieur de Treville is trying to change the Kings mind the Cardinal has a "change of heart" and tells the King he was wrong and to let Athos free. Monsieur de Treville was very suspicious as to why this sudden change of heart, and he was right to be. After Athos and Monsieur de Treville left, the Cardinal told the King of the Queen's love afair with the Duke, and tells the King he should ask the Queen to wear the brooch he gave her to this party. So the King does. While this is all happening the Cardinal has someone steal two of the diamonds off the brooch.
...Madame Bonacieux goes to d'Artagnan and asks him if he would be willing to help find the Duke and give him a letter from the Queen. Without even thinking he agrees because of his love for Madame Bonacieux. When the three musketeers hear of this they decide to go with him, yet d'Artagnan is the only one who gets all the way to where the Duke was. He gives the Duke the letter...the Duke then goes to get the brooch only to find that two of the diamonds are missing. So he calls someone to fix it. D'Artagnan makes it back just in time to deliver the brooch before anyone knew about it.
...In thanks for retrieving the brooch, the Queen gives d'Artagnan a ring, and Madame Boacieux tells him she is sending him a letter. He then rushes home to see if the letter is there yet and it was. It told him a time and place to meet her. But when he arrived there she wasn't there, so he waited for an hour out side the house. Then he finally decided to go inside and realized what had happened. She had been kidnapped again. D'Artagnan went to Monsieur de Treville and told him what he had seen. Monsieur de Treville then told him to leave Paris and find his friends. After he had found his friends, one night Athos was drunk and started telling d'Artagnan about a women he had married. How she turned out to be pure evil, and was marked
