As life goes on for the three musketeers and d'Artagnan, they get a letter from Monsieur de Treville informing them that the campaign against Britain has begun and with this news brings a problem, they needed equipment. And they had no money. Porthos is able to get back into his mistress's affection and because of this she decides to supply them with what they needed. D'Artagnan become very distracted when he notices the women from Meung. He feels that she is affecting his life in some way, and he is right. She is Milady, an agent of the Cardinal. He become overly obsessed with her because of her connections with the man from Meung, and his connections with Madame Bonacieux disappearance. D'Artagnan see Milady fighting with a man and confronts them. The man ends up being Lord de Winter, Milady's brother, and the two men agree to duel the next day. D'Artagnan with the three musketeers as his seconds show up for the duel. Athos, Aramis and Porthos kill their opponents. D'Artagnan disarms Lord de Winter and spares his life because he is "in love" with Milady. So Lord de Winter agrees to take d'Artagnan to see her. D'Artagnan is introduce to Milady and is quit taken by her. Even though she is quit "two faced." When she knows people are watching, she is quit polite, but as soon as she thinks no ones around her face turns into one of a murderous animal. Then one day Kitty, Milady's maid, pulls d'Artagnan aside and tells him she has fallen in love with him. She also informs him that Milady is in love with someone else and actually hates him. So d'Artagnan convinces Kitty to let him overhear Milady's conversations so he can hear this for himself. And then he pretends to love Kitty. D'Artagnan needed Milady to confess to the kidnapping of Madame Bonacieux and in order to do that he was going to make himself appear to be the man she was really in love with and get her to tell him everything. But his plan didn't work how he wanted it to. He never told her who he really was and never got the information he needed. He then went and found Athos and told him what happened. And when Athos saw the ring on d'Artagnan's finger he told d'Artagnan he needed to stay away from her. But d'Artagnan doesn't listen. He goes back to Milady and tells him that it was him not the man she was in love with, and then shows her the ring to prove it. She then tries to attack him and while d'Artagnan is pulling her off of him her shirt rips exposing the mark on her shoulder, and that's when d'Artagnan realized who she was.
...D'Artagnan rushes over to the place Athos was staying and tells him what happened. They both feel it wise to sell the ring she gave him. Because d'Artagnan agreed to protect Kitty he found a safe place for her to stay, and before she left, Kitty tells d'Artagnan that Monsieur Bonacieux is a frequent visitor at Milady's house.
...D'Artagnan receives two letters, one asking him to wait under a bridge becuase Madame Bonacieux will be passing by there, and the other saying he has to be present at the Palais Cardinal that same evening. And so he and the three musketeers go to both. At the bridge d'Artagnan did get to see Madame Bonacieux but only as she speeded past in a carriage. And then while d'Artagnan is at the Palais Cardinal, the Cardinal offers him a post in his guard, but he declines the offer. The next day d'Artagnan goes to La Rochelle alone and Milady had two men try to kill him, but d'Artagnan killed one and then retrieved a letter from the other. The letter telling him that Madame Bonacieux was safe some where in France.
...The three musketeers are enlisted to be the Cardinals personal body guards, after running into him at dinner in an inn. They wait for him while he enters a meeting, and then Athos realizes he can hear what is being said. He hears Milady's voice also and the Cardinal telling her to go find the Duke of Buckingham and tell him to either desist in his war against France or the Cardinal was going to expose his affair with the Queen.
